Independent Educational Evaluations (IEEs)

An independent educational evaluation is conducted by a professional who is not an employee of the child’s school district, and is used to determine the child’s special education needs. IEEs are done at public expense, which means the parent does not pay for the evaluation but rather the school district or some other entity covers the full cost of it. Under the individuals with disabilities education act (IDEA), parents have the right to request an IEE for their child if they disagree with the special education evaluation conducted by the school district.
