Individualized Education Programs

An IEP, which stands for Individualized Education Program, is designed to support children with special needs in their educational settings. Whether your child requires assistance with note-taking or specialized equipment to aid in hearing or vision during class, an IEP can provide the necessary help.

How to Get an IEP

Once your child’s requirement for special education services is identified, you can obtain an Individualized Education Program (IEP). Once the school district acknowledges the necessity for services for your child, they will provide an IEP.

What Does an IEP Contain?

It is essential to provide a statement detailing your child’s current academic level and performance across various areas. This assessment helps evaluate the effectiveness of the Individualized Education Program (IEP) for your child.

Furthermore, the IEP must include specific educational goals for your child, along with short-term objectives in addition to annual goals. Parents should also review the IEP to understand its start date, implementation settings, and completion date.

The IEP should outline how and when parents will receive updates on their child’s progress. For example, it may specify quarterly reviews, or regular communications such as weekly or biweekly emails regarding their child’s development.

Within the IEP, it is crucial to document which accommodations benefit your child and their impact on district- or state-wide assessments. In some cases, children on IEPs may not participate in standard state or district assessments but undergo alternative forms of assessment.
