Risk of Injury to a Minor

Connecticut General Statutes § 53-21 addresses the injury or risk of injury to children, and states that anyone who:

  1. willfully causes or allows a child under 16 to be put in a situation where their life or safety is endangered,
  2. engages with a child under 16 in a sexually inappropriate manner, or
  3. transfers or receives the custody of a child under 16 in exchange for money or some other consideration (other than adoption)

may be guilty of a class C felony (bullets 1 & 3) or a class B felony (bullet 2 involving children ages 13-16). [1]

Risk of Injury to a Minor is a very serious charge, and it is important to understand the regulations that you are subject to as a day care provider. If you are a day care center owner or employee who is being charged with Risk of Injury, investigated by DCF or contacted by OEC, it is important that you speak to an attorney.
