School Refusal

School refusal is identified as regular difficulty staying in school or refusal to go to school at all. This avoidance may be a coping mechanism for dealing with stress and is considered a symptom associated with diagnoses such as generalized anxiety disorder, major depressive disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder.

School Refusal vs. Truancy

School refusal:

  • Students are distressed about attending school
  • Parents are aware of their child’s absences and are persuaded by their child to let them stay home
  • Antisocial behaviors are uncommon
  • Students stay home during school hours for the most part

  • Students do not tend to have anxiety about attending school
  • Students often try to hide their absences from their parents
  • Antisocial behaviors and delinquency are common
  • Students usually do not stay home during school hours
