What Is the Difference Between a Divorce and an Annulment in Connecticut?

In a divorce action, the court ultimately dissolves what was a valid and legal marriage.  In an annulment proceeding, a marriage is declared null and void, as if it had never happened, because it occurred under circumstances that made it legally void or voidable in the first place.  Grounds for annulment include that the marriage was between two parties where at least one party was already married, the marriage was performed without a license, or the marriage was performed by someone who was not authorized to do so.
