Individuals with Disabilities Education Act

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) ensures that children with disabilities who are eligible receive a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) and access to special education services. The IDEA regulates how states provide special education services to individuals ages 3 through 21, and early intervention services from birth through age 2. The purpose of the IDEA is to ensure that the unique needs of children with disabilities are met, their rights are protected, schools have the proper resources to support these children, and that these programs are effective.
