Hazing Under Connecticut Law

Hazing behavior is widely discouraged on college campuses, yet it continues to be a prevalent issue especially in sorority and fraternity life. Under Connecticut law, § 53-23a defines hazing as: “any action which recklessly or intentionally endangers the health or safety of a person for the purpose of initiation, admission into or affiliation with, or as a condition for continued membership in a student organization”. The following are offenses that are considered hazing, although this list is not all-encompassing:

  • Forced indecent exposure of the body
  • Forced activity that causes a person extreme mental stress (isolation, sleep deprivation, etc.)
  • Confinement of a person to an extremely small, dark, unsanitary, or unventilated area
  • Assault on a person
  • Forced ingestion of a substance or forced physical activity that could threaten the health and safety of a person
