When a child is accused of committing a crime, their academic career and future can be negatively impacted. As a parent, it is important to have a basic understanding of the youth justice system in Connecticut in the event that your child is involved in a crime. If your child has been placed in juvenile detention in Connecticut, contact one of our attorneys at (203) 221-3100.

What Happens After Being Placed in a Juvenile Detention Center

Once a child arrives at a juvenile detention center, they will be searched, take a shower, and given a mandatory uniform to wear. The child will be questioned regarding how they are feeling and any drug/alcohol use to see if they are a danger to themselves or others. It is important to be truthful during this questioning, as this information will be reported back to the judge who could make recommendations for mental health counseling and/or evaluations. In addition to this, the child will be asked to complete a risk assessment evaluation. During this questioning, the child should refrain from talking about their criminal activity and signing anything without discussing it with their lawyer first, as the information that they disclose to their lawyer is confidential.
